Dr Mary Talbot
Mary Talbot was born in Wigan, England in the 1950s. She is married to comics creator Bryan Talbot, and they have have two sons. Mary studied English Literature and Linguistics at Preston Polytechnic as a mature student, and completed a PhD on Critical Discourse Analysis in 1990. She became the Reader in Language and Culture at the University of Sunderland in 1997, and in 2004 she was invited as Visiting Professor to Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou. She has retired from academic life, and is currently a freelance writer.
Mary has written a number of non-fiction works, and her book Language and Gender is the text of choice for many university lecturers and students worldwide, and it was recently revised for a second edition. Dotter of Her Father's Eyes, illustrated by her husband Bryan, is part memoir, part biography - Mary contrasts two coming of age narratives: that of Lucia, the daughter of James Joyce, and herself, daughter of the eminent Joycean scholar James S Atherton. She is currently writing a historical graphic novel set in Edwardian England.
This is Mary Talbot's first P-CON, and we delighted she can attend this year.
